Hi, I’m Elvar Smári. Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, grew up reading books, watching films and making stuff. I schemed to learn the guitar to earn popularity from the cool kids. It did not work, but it introduced music into my life. Soon I was finding all kinds of weird albums on the internet.
One day in high school, driving in my friend’s car, we heard Trentemøller’s remix of State Trooper on the radio. We thought hey this is sick and we could totally make that. So we bought some MIDI controllers which we had no idea what to do with. That started me on the path of production, recording and synthesizers.
I studied graphic design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, didn’t really enjoy my time there, probably because I was just making beats all the time. I dropped out and released an EP, not worth showing, but it did gather some praise.
I re-entered the Iceland Academy of the Arts studying musical composition, and never felt as at home in my life. Friends started asking me to record them or mix their song and I loved helping them. After graduating I continued assisting people in all kinds of musical endeavours.
I never stopped making my own music, I just didn’t take it as seriously for a while. Eventually I started feeling that I too had something to say, and enjoyed the process of finishing something, even if it’s sometimes challenging as well. The challenge makes it worth doing.
So now I’m releasing a long album with a long title. It’s an attempt to pull together all these strings, different influences, experiences, sensibilities and skills. It’s also a step toward where I'm headed, which includes writing music for film.
